Meet The "Coder"

The Gyal Behind 'Gyal Code'

Lele was born in New Jersey to a Jamaican father & African-American mother. Growing up, she was immersed in the culture of both her parents, but as she grew older, the magnetism to her father’s culture was undeniable. As if being a certified Jersey girl didn’t make her blunt enough, throughout her life her father's advice often encouraged her to amplify this energy of boldness & confidence shamelessly, so these are the morals by which she chose to live her life.

By her teenage years, Lele was well known as the “outspoken friend” to most who knew her. Throughout her life, many women gravitated towards her wanting to know how to be more bold & outspoken, and every time they did, she was happy to help.

After a while, she realized there were a lot of women out there who needed this brand of empowerment in their life, so she decided to figure out how to help on a larger scale—and from this, Gyal Code was born. The brand mission was to empower women to be shamelessly bold & outspoken, while also honoring the culture and person that pushed her to have the strength to do so herself.

Although “gyal” simply means “girl ” in patois*, building her brand grew the word into so much more for her. For her, Gyal Code is a way to honor her heritage and her father, because without either she would not be the woman she is today.

As a brand, Gyal Code is all about giving no f*cks about how the way you live your life makes others feel, as long as it's what's best for you. It's being able to provide other gyals with that same respect & supporting all women, even when their personal brand of empowerment isn't the same as yours.

It's never never dimming your light or losing sight of your dreams no matter what the world throws at you. It represents us all being one, but still so individually special at the same time. It's standing up for yourself & what you believe in shamelessly, and being yourself unapologetically, even (and especially) when doing so makes others uncomfortable.

That’s Gyal Code.

(*“Patois” is an english dialect used in Jamaica...there is no language called “Jamaican”)
